OTHER BUSINESS:
A PIECE OF BYRAM SCHOOL HISTORY AVAILABLE FOR SALE
The glass blocks that formed the principal’s
office and were preserved from the demolition of Byram
School on the corner of Siwel Road and
Terry Road will be for sale for the first time at the
Swinging Bridge 5K Run at the Courthouse Racquet Club on the
Byram Parkway on
Saturday, July 12. Here’s a chance to own one of these
signature features of this Byram Landmark.
A table for the sale of the blocks will be open from 8 AM
to 10 AM during the 5K run. Individual glass blocks will be sold for
$50.00 each. There are some blocks still together in
multiples of 2 or more. These will be sold for $40.00 for
each attached block. As the supply dwindles, the price is
subject to an increase. So shop early!
Polk's Drugs has Byram T-Shirts for sale for $10.00.
The sizes are Small to 2X. Go buy one and wear with Byram Pride!
The
Citizens for Byram Incorporation meet each week at 7 PM,
Thursday at Trinity Wesleyan Church, 6950 Siwel Road.
Please come to hear the latest updates on the status of the
Supreme Court case.
Memorabilia from Byram School Available for Sale Soon
A limited number of the glass blocks that graced the old
Byram Attendance Center, later lovingly known as the
Byram
Middle School will be available for purchase through the
Interim Board of Aldermen sometime in the spring. At this
time, tentative plans are for those glass blocks not sold to
be used in the building of Byram's future City Hall. All
proceeds from the sale of the glass blocks will go toward
the payment of legal expenses incurred and continuing to be
incurred in the incorporation effort. Dates, times, places,
price to be announced shortly. So keep reading the Byram
Banner and watch the byramonline.com web site for
this information. Also available at byramonline.com
is the proposed agenda for the Hinds County Board of
Supervisors’ meetings.
Newly elected Hinds County District 4 Supervisor, Phil
Fisher has appointed Interim Alderman Amy Douglas to the
Hinds County Planning and Zoning Board. Mr. Fisher realizes
that the Byram area needs to have representation on this
Board as we continue to grow prior to the final
incorporation ruling by the State Supreme Court. Ms.
Douglas as a long time resident and business owner can give
us the voice we need in matters pertaining to zoning issues.
As our incorporation case continues to make its way through
the legal system, your Interim Board of Aldermen continue to
meet each Thursday night at
7:00 PM
at
Trinity
Wesleyan Church on Siwel Road."
Citizens For Byram Incorporation Preserve Part Of Byram
School
The
good news is that Citizens for Byram Incorporation contacted
the company demolishing Byram School and got permission to
remove the glass block from the office on the Siwell Road
side of the building. Good headway was made Saturday,
August 25 before the rains came and shut us down. The bad
news is that someone went up there Sunday and helped
themselves to some of the glass block. If anyone offers you
glass block claiming it is from the Byram School other than
members of the Citizens for Byram Incorporation, they were
obtained without permission of either the demolition company
or Citizens for Byram Incorporation. All of the glass
blocks are the property of the Citizens for Byram
Incorporation.
The decision as this is being written is that the glass
block will be reused in the New City Hall of Byram, when one
is constructed. The group has not decided if any of the
blocks will be available for purchase nor what the price
would be. It was suggested that all the blocks go into City
Hall and that citizens could purchase the right to have
their name etched on them as they are on display there.
When a definite decision is made, we will certainly let the
citizens know.
Those giving their time and energy on the retrieval of the
glass blocks this past weekend were: Interim Mayor Nick
Tremonte, Interim Aldermen Kent Alday, Amy Douglas, Theresa
Marble, Richard White and citizens, Larry Allen, Bryan
Flournoy, Charlie Graham, James Graves, Lura Matthews, Gay
Polk, Steve Reno and Margie White. J.D. Polk furnished a
truck and trailer to haul the blocks and worked with us.
Arthur Dortch helped by driving the truck and loading on
Saturday. McAlister’s Deli and Back Yard Burgers furnished
meals for the group on Saturday. Vowell’s Market Place,
Only A Buck and Super D gave us ad papers and bags to wrap
the blocks for storage. We couldn’t have done it without
the tools supplied by Revell Hardware and Joe Rooks. Thanks
to all these hard workers and businesses that made this
possible.
We continue to need funds to pay the final legal fees being
generated by the appeals to the State Supreme Court against
Byram’s incorporation. Mail your contributions to Citizens
for Byram Incorporation, P. O. Box 720222, Byram, MS 39272.
The Byram Business Association has agreed to co-sponsor
another “Meet the Candidate” night with CBI on October 25.
Be sure and put this date on your calendar now.
Byram's Awarded Incorporation Stalled By Appeals
Judge William
Singletary has signed the final portion of the decree
clearing the way for Byram to become a city. Unfortunately
the Judge allowed part of the area we had requested to be
annexed by the City of Jackson. Then on May 31, 2007, three
appeals were filed against the Annexation and Incorporation
by the following: Buddy Brock, a Copiah County resident, as
an individual; the second one by: Whit Adams, Yolande Allen,
Charles Brooks, Charlotte Bryant, Shirley Davis, Mac
Edwards, Toni Jones, Carol Manning, Stanley Noble, Caraleigh
Paramore, Annette Parrett, Darrell Smith, Mike Walley, Helen
White, Howard Whitlock, Shirley Williams; and third was the
City of Jackson. Sixteen (16) people in the Brookwood area
are trying to control the destiny of 11,000+ people in Hinds
County. If you know any of these individuals, please be
sure and thank them for stopping Byram from becoming a City
for at least another year. At a meeting that the Interim
Board of CBI were invited to attend at Brookwood Country
Club, it was voted on and passed that they would not appeal
the Incorporation. But since they did, the City of Jackson
had to file a cross appeal to all their paperwork. We hope
the process will be shorter than a year but it could
possibly be as long as two years.
Now this will go to the Supreme Court with Attorney Jerry
Mills continuing to represent the Citizens for Byram
Incorporation. We still need to raise funds to pay for this
appeal. Even after we are incorporated, the City of Byram
cannot pay these legal expenses. This is the LAST
step before Byram will be a City and we can make decisions
for our area without someone out of the area doing it for
us.
